Main Loch Report

Postby GG » Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:43 pm

Sport picking up again now after a difficult June with changing weather and fish spawning. Matches have been tricky but pleasure catches are taking off now with 40 to 60lb nets of carp happening more often.

With hotter weather the fish are coming right up in the water, and also close in at times. Pellet waggler tactics are accounting for the biggest catches now, generally fished 1 to 3ft deep. All species also being caught well on the pole either fishing shallow up in the water or on the bottom no more than 8-9ft deep. Pellet working best for carp and worm and caster working for silver fish, especially skimmers to 1lb+.

It’s time to start thinking of using stronger tackle with bigger carp coming out more regularly now with the best fish nearing 12lb now. Evenings are still a great time of day and often this is when fish are best caught very close in, especially on the café back where 2 or 3ft or water next to the rushes is a great place for big fish.

Feeder tactics are less effective now, especially in deep water, but you can still catch well on feeder on the odd cooler day or if you make sure not to cast too far into deep water.

PLEASE ADD YOUR REPORTS AND UPDATES TO THIS TOPIC :D

I fished peg 16 on the cafe bank on Saturday afternoon from half two to half four. I only had my waggler rod, floats and a selection of pellets with me. I was told on entering the shop that the main loch was still very slow with only small silvers being caught. Anyway it turned out to be the best session this year for me so far with around 40lb+ in two hours all on the pellet and splash waggler methods. At one point my swim was jet black with carp bubbling and fizzing away. It was that good that I got fed up catching them.

God I love this method of fishing. There may not be much skill involved but I now understand what the pleasure means in "pleasure fishing"

Main Loch fishing really well just now in pleasure sessions. I fished a couple of hours messing about in the morning and then the torrential rain came and I fished another couple of hours in the aftenoon after having some lunch at Freidas. I had easy 30lbs ( 20 odd carp) on the pellet waggler. There was a young lad to my right fishing under the tree on peg 19 and he had a good few fish too. There was a guy fishing 4 pegs to my left who must have had at the very least double what I had. The anglers on the other bank were all catching too. At long last it seems to be coming good. :D :D :D

After having a good night Thursday fishing the Main Loch I decided to return today for more. On this occasion I got the area surrounding Peg number 11 to myself as I was the only person fishing the splasher. As I was going to fish for 6 hours I decided to split my fishing into 2 sessions in order that the fish were not too long in the net.

I fished the splasher shallow using 8mm pellets firing 8mm pellets over the splasher. It was slow to start with and I only caught one fish in the first hour before attracting a shoal to my swim. From then on it was catching on a regular basis for the remainder of the day. The first session lasted from 1530 until 1830 hours and produced 35lb-3oz of Carp.

Thanks to Brido and Marti for assisting with weighing and photographing.

With all fish returned safely to the water I started my second session which continued where I left of in the first. Another 36lbs of Carp to give me a days total of 71lbs in 6 hours, a great day once more.

Yes the Main Loch is fishing well just now. ;)

Fished the Main Loch last Friday night teaching my grandson Scott the finer elements of fishing the Pellet and Splasg Waggler. Taking alternate fish on the rod from 4pm to 9pm we caught 80lbs plus ( estimated ) and that was just 20 fish heaviest being 6.5lbs. Loads of others fishing around us also taking plenty Carp. ;)

Forgot my camera that day, it wasn't so bad for myself and Scott, it was for a Newbie ( Gaz K ) that we showed how to fish the wagler as Scott took photo's on his phone that didn't come out due to the fading light. He had two PBs Carp to 4lb. :pale

Was a strange day. As Craig said, the fish were being really finicky at times, making it very frustrating to hit them, and other times they just wolfed the bait away. The fight off them was incredible, even the little F1 I picked up put up a hell of a fight, and it was only around the pound and a bit mark. And there was barely a mark on any of them.

Good times :)

Fished peg 7 from back of ten till back of one,sun was out but still cold and water was choppy.
My intended plan was waggler, instead went for the tip casting five feet left of bouys and five foot short of it.The result was ten carp and four bream all on double white maggot :thumb

The Waggler Awakes

It was just a matter of time before someone gave it a real go and that someone was Bryan Hewitt. Fishing it today Bryan caught around 60lbs with the following Mirror Carp being the best.
