island pond 14.7.2012

Postby stevieITR » Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:12 pm

had a great wee day today, caught carp for the first time, biggest was 2.6lb ended up with 2 carp but i lost 6.

can some1 maybe tell me where im going wrong. i was using a method feeder with ground bait and particles. 3 inch long size 14 hair rig with double sweetcorn as bait.

I had the fish hooked but for some reason 6 out of 8 came off, 1 of them felt much heavier than the carp i had at 2.6lb.

any advice would be great.

heres pics of my fish

There is a few reasons for this too happen Stevie,is the drag tension set correctly :?: also if you are using the method feeder make sure that you don't strike into the fish and let the fish self hook itself, striking is more likely too help release the hook from the fishs' mouth mate :thumb

thanks for the advise.

I didnt have any drag set which im guessing was my real downfall? and i was also trying to strike to hook the fish so yet another mistake. I was using method feeders with elastic if that makes any difference attol?

1 thing i did notice today is that once the method feeder was in the water for about 2 minutes i was getting bite indications non stop. im asuming this is the carp biting at the groundbait loaded to the feeder?

Stevie: I have it fixed in my mind that I loss more fish on the method feeders with elastic hence I prefer not to use them. Once something is in my mind I stick by it. It's a terrible way to be as I have favourite floats, hooks and even colours of maggots. ;) :D :D :D

ok ill get some different method feeders for saturday.

another question, is it best to use groundbait or hallibut pellets? iv just went and bought both for saturday so im looking forward to getting more carp and hopfully a tench would be awsome.

oh and i also just bought a quivertip rod lol

ok so heres the plan for saturday, non elastic method feeder, size 14 hair rig with double corn as bait, quivertip rod set at 90 degrees to the water, and wait for the bites coming lol. oh and this time i will be letting the fish self hook themselves.

anyone got a link to somewere that shows best way to rig up a method feeder?

thanks for all the help guys

If you ask in the shop about ground bait and hook bait they will keep you right for the day, everyone has there own personal preferences tho.

Pre-made hook lengths is a time saver for me.

hi stevie what andy says is pretty spot on. I use the preston inline feeder small 15g and quick stop changing bead for the hooklengths,i also prefer to use 2mm pellet for the feeder and 6mm banded pellet on hair rig either size 14 or 16 hook. as andy says the fish will hook itself just wait for the wrapround :thumb i will also be up on saturday fishing the island so if you need a hand to set up the method feeder i will show you how :thumb
